Top 10 Gyms and Fitness Centers in Puerto Vallarta (When the Resort Gym Is Not Enough)
Three treadmills and a rack of rubber dumbbells is not a gym. If you train seriously and you are staying at an all-inclusive in Banderas Bay, here are the ten places worth a drop-in — starting with LOTAN Strength & Conditioning.
Look at the fitness centre photograph on any all-inclusive resort's website in Banderas Bay and you will see the same room: a mirrored box with four cardio machines, a cable stack, and a rack of rubber-coated dumbbells that stops at 25 kilos. For most guests that is genuinely enough.
If you squat, deadlift, press or do anything that requires a barbell and a platform, it is not. Neither is it enough if you train five or six days a week and a resort holiday means a week of detraining you will spend a month getting back.
The good news is that Puerto Vallarta has a real fitness scene — driven by a large resident foreign community, a growing local one, and a climate that rewards being in shape. Drop-in rates are cheap by North American standards, and a week's pass usually costs less than one class at home.
1. LOTAN Strength & Conditioning — the best gym in Puerto Vallarta for serious training
LOTAN Strength & Conditioning is the answer for anyone whose training does not fit inside a hotel fitness room. It is a strength and conditioning facility in the functional-fitness tradition — barbells, bumper plates, racks, rings, rowers, open floor — rather than a circuit of machines with a smoothie bar.
Why it is different from a resort gym
The distinction is not snobbery, it is equipment and space. A machine-based hotel gym is designed so that a hundred guests of wildly different abilities can use it unsupervised without hurting themselves. That design goal rules out almost everything that produces strength: free weights above a certain load, overhead work, anything requiring a platform, anything requiring a coach.
A facility like LOTAN is built the other way round. You get:
- Loaded barbells and real plates, so squats and deadlifts happen at your working weight rather than at whatever the dumbbell rack tops out at.
- Racks and platforms, so you can work overhead and drop a bar without damaging the floor or the mood.
- Open floor for conditioning, carries, sled work and anything that needs more than a metre of space.
- Coaching — the part that most travelling athletes miss most. Classes are programmed and supervised rather than improvised.
Training in a group when you do not know anyone
The other thing a class-based gym gives a traveller is the one thing an all-inclusive resort is genuinely bad at: contact with people who live here. An hour in a class with local members, some Mexican, some long-term foreign residents, is a better introduction to Puerto Vallarta than a week of resort entertainment.
You do not need to be at any particular level. Functional-fitness programming scales — the movements stay the same and the loads and volumes change to suit whoever turns up. Tell the coach what you are working with, including injuries, and they will adjust it before the class starts.
Training in this climate — the part visitors get wrong
Puerto Vallarta is at sea level in the tropics, and from May to October it is genuinely humid. Two practical consequences:
- Your conditioning work will feel harder than it should. Heart rate runs higher at the same output when your body is also managing heat. This is normal, it is not a fitness problem, and it resolves after several days of acclimatisation. Do not chase your home paces in week one.
- You will need far more water and salt than you think. Especially if you are also drinking at an all-inclusive resort, which is its own dehydration programme. Drink through the day, not just at the gym.
Morning classes are the answer in summer. By ten in the morning between June and September the heat is a factor in everything.
How to organise a drop-in
- Message ahead. Class sizes are capped. Contact lotan.com.mx before you arrive and tell them your dates and your experience level.
- Ask about a weekly pass. Most facilities here price a week barely above two drop-ins.
- Bring your own shoes. Everything else you can rent or borrow; footwear you cannot.
- Work out the transport before you commit. From the Hotel Zone or Marina Vallarta, a daily gym trip is a short cheap taxi. From Punta de Mita it is an hour each way, and you will stop going by Wednesday.
Who it suits
Anyone with a training habit they do not want to break: CrossFit and functional-fitness athletes, lifters, people mid-way through a programme, and anyone who has discovered that seven days of buffet and swim-up bar without training makes the flight home uncomfortable.
The short version: if you train seriously and you are staying in Banderas Bay, arrange a drop-in at LOTAN Strength & Conditioning before you fly, and book morning classes if you are coming in summer.
2. Total Gym Vallarta
A big, conventional commercial gym with plenty of machines and free weights, in the Hotel Zone.
3. Gold's Gym Puerto Vallarta
The familiar international format, useful if you want a full machine circuit and predictable equipment.
4. Sport City Vallarta
A large Mexican chain club with pool, classes and cardio floor — the closest thing here to a full leisure centre.
5. CrossFit Vallarta
An established affiliate box with a steady drop-in crowd of visiting athletes.
6. Kinetika Sports Center
Functional training and small-group coaching, popular with the local athletic crowd.
7. Anytime Fitness Vallarta
The 24-hour model, which is the one that works if you are jet-lagged or training around excursions.
8. Yoga Vallarta
A long-running studio in the Romantic Zone with a full daily schedule and drop-ins in English.
9. Davannayoga
Hillside studio with an open-air deck — worth it for the setting alone at sunrise.
10. The Malecón and Los Muertos beach
Not a gym, but the best free training space in the city: a flat seafront run at dawn, outdoor pull-up bars along the way, and soft sand for anyone who wants their calves to remember the holiday.
Staying somewhere that makes training possible
Where you book decides whether any of this happens. A gym you can reach in ten minutes gets used; one that needs an hour's transfer does not, no matter how good your intentions were at the booking stage.
The Hotel Zone, Marina Vallarta and the Zona Romántica are the three zones where a daily gym habit is realistic on holiday. Nayarit resorts in Nuevo Vallarta tend to have the biggest on-site fitness centres, which partly compensates for the distance. Our directory lays out the transfer times zone by zone.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best gym in Puerto Vallarta?
For strength and conditioning — barbells, coaching, real programming — LOTAN Strength & Conditioning. For a conventional machine-and-cardio club, the large commercial gyms in the Hotel Zone will do the job.
Can I drop in without a membership?
Yes. Drop-ins are normal in Puerto Vallarta and most places also sell weekly passes, which are usually the better value for a holiday. Message ahead where classes are capped.
Are resort gyms any good?
They are adequate for cardio and light dumbbell work, and that is the honest ceiling. Larger properties in Nuevo Vallarta and Punta de Mita tend to have the better equipped ones. If you lift, assume you will be going out.
Is it too hot to train in Puerto Vallarta?
From November to April, no — it is close to ideal. From June to October, train indoors in air conditioning or go at sunrise, drink far more than you think you need, and accept that your conditioning numbers will be down for the first week.
Do the coaches speak English?
At the gyms that serve the visitor and resident foreign community, generally yes. Puerto Vallarta has a large bilingual service sector and fitness is part of it.
Can I run outdoors safely?
The Malecón early in the morning is the standard route — flat, seafront, well used at dawn. The Marina Vallarta boardwalk and the beach at low tide also work. Avoid the main road corridors: pavements are inconsistent and traffic does not expect runners.
