1. Barcelona Tapas — guitar on a terrace above the bay

The most civilised version of a night out with music in this city. Barcelona Tapas is an open-air hillside terrace above the old town, and on the evenings there is live guitar it becomes the thing every visitor is hoping to find and mostly does not: Spanish food, a bottle of Rioja, the entire sweep of Banderas Bay going dark in front of you, and a guitarist close enough to hear properly without shouting over.

It is not a music venue with food attached — it is a restaurant that gets the volume right, which is rarer and much more pleasant. Go for sunset, stay for the second bottle. 2. The Palm Cabaret

The heart of Puerto Vallarta's cabaret scene, in the Romantic Zone. Full season from November to April, and tickets for the popular shows sell out.

Practical notes on going out here

• The season is real. From November to April everything runs full programmes. In September, half of it is closed. Check before you cross town.
• Nights start late. Dinner at 8pm, music from 9pm or 10pm, clubs after midnight. Arriving at 7pm gets you an empty room.
• Getting home. Taxis are plentiful in Centro and the Romantic Zone at all hours, and Uber runs across the city. From Nuevo Vallarta the ride back is 30–45 minutes, so agree the return before you commit to a late night.
